The boys pile into the basement, its fixtures and fittings make for a ready-made ‘detention centre’, and also as it goes, Chris’ drama space in the normal course of things. He prepares the boys for the first shoot by asking them to imagine what had happened immediately before they’d entered the room… why had they been put in detention? what was going to happen when they got home? how do they feel about that? They voice their scenarios, focus on the feeling and get into character.

This makes me revisit the importance of context in any learning experience. Opening a dialogue along the lines of “and this is why…” deepens engagement and is likely to produce more credible performances.
